SUNDAY SCHOOL

Again this year, 2009-2010, we will use the We Believe curriculum. Only this year, it has been revised and will take on a new look. We Believe, a curriculum written by Presbyterians for Presbyterians, is designed to help all ages develop an understanding of Reformed theology and how we as Presbyterians understand the Word of God and apply that understanding in our daily lives.

The Fall Quarter the children will study Old Testament stories of God's people as they encounter God in creation, the law, and covenant relationship. Worship is highlighted as the Israelite people become more corporate and sophisticated. They honor the law given to them by building the Ark of the Covenant, understanding it as God dwelling with them. When the Ark is captured in battle, the Israelites mourn the very loss of God in their midst. King David establishes a home for the Ark and a center for worshp life for the people of Israel in Jerusalem, and Solomon builds a temple to God's glory and to be a hosue for God on earth.

We have a large staff that works within our Preschool through 6th grade children's programs. A team teaching approach is used.  The classes are grouped as follows:

Preschool - Kindergarten
1st - 3rd
4th-6th

During the school year, Sunday School convenes each morning at 10:40 in the Gathering Room on the third floor.  A time of fellowship, complete with refreshments, is followed by singing, announcements, and prayer.

Students are dismissed to the library/computer lab at 11:40.  There they can watch a video, play Bible computer games or board games, or read/check out books until their parents come to pick them up.

Once a quarter we celebrate baptism anniversaries.  Each student is recognized on the anniversary month of their baptism.  Refreshments are served as we celebrate this most important event and day in each of our children’s lives.
Sunday School does not meet during the summer months. But we always take a special
Sunday to say thank you to our teachers with a bruch together!

2008 Theme...Year of the Olympics
In conjuntion with the 2008 Summer Olympics, the theme has continued through our weekly Sunday School. The kids are learning what the five Olympic rings stand for and how to apply those concepts to their daily living. Each week the students earn Olympic rings for their attendance, learning memory verses, and bringing friends. The first Medal ceremony was held on Sunday, November 2nd. There were 7 Gold medals given, 21 silver, and 14 bronze. It was a great celebration and the kids look forward to beginning a new round of competition. Check out the pictures below.

2009 Theme...Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23

LOVE...JOY...PEACE...PATIENCE...

KINDNESS...GOODNESS...FAITHFULNESS...

GENTLENESS...SELF-COTROL

Each Sunday Morning we will gather at 10:40 to sing, share, and pray. During that Opening time we will

talk about one of the fruit of the sprit. Collect fruit each week for being in attendance, learning a

memory verse, or bringing a friend. As your fruit basket grows, hopefully your knowledge and

faith will as well. When we combine all our fruit at the end of the year, we will enjoy a big

fruit salad that just may come in the form of a party. Hope to see you each Sunday morning.

Vacation
Bible
School
2009

First Presbyterian Church conducts an annual Vacation Bible School the last full week of June. This year's theme was Discovery Canyon.   We see this as a mission of the entire church and are pleased to be able to offer the school at no charge. Each morning, children ages four years through third grade enjoyed games, snacks and spiritual nourishment.  VBS is staffed by lots volunteers with many youth helping.  A nursery is provided for small children of the staff leading VBS. Vacation Bible School has been a long standing tradition of First Presbyterian Church and continues to be a time when multiple generations come together to learn, worship and serve.

Vacation Beneath the Stars
In 2008 we began a new venture for students in 4th-7th grade, and we offered a 26 hour retreat entitiled Vacation on Barberry Street. The kids gathered at the home of our pastor where they engaged in a thought-provoking study entitled "Don't Laught At Me."
In 2009, the fun grew to include a full weekend at the Family Camp in Valley Center. We learned about "The Many Tables of Our Lives" during our Vacation Beneath the Stars. In addition to all the lessons and discussions we kept cool and had a blast swimming, playing with water balloons, inventing glow-in-the dark capture the flag, making s'mores, and (of course) dunking everyone in the dunk tank! We can't wait to see what fun awaits in 2010!

Learning to Use My Bible Course

Years ago the Christian Education Committee implemented a fun and stimulating 12-week study of the Bible for the 3rd grade class. This was done to prepare these students for receiving their own Good News Bibles. This year our class will be a combined third and fourth grade. They will spend each Sunday from September through December memorizing verses and learning many different things about their faith and the Presbyterian Church. Call the Christian Education office for more information.
